Tool 8a – Reporting template

Purpose: This tool gives a generalized structure that you can consider when creating your SROI report. 

Refer to: Go through each tool as mentioned in the process, and pull out key messages and insights to be included in the report. As the report is being developed, the tools and supporting documents can be referred to as needed for details. 

1. Cover page

  • Project Name: Clearly state the name of the project or initiative.
  • Reporting Period: Mention the time frame the report covers.
  • Organization Details: Include details like the organization name, address, contact information, and grant identification numbers if applicable.
  • Acknowledgments: Thank contributors, partners, or funders for their support.

2. Executive summary

  • Overview: Brief overview of the project, key findings, and the calculated ROI. Consider highlighting key achievements, challenges faced, and major milestones reached within your program as well.

3. Introduction

  • Purpose: Define the objectives of the SROI analysis. (Tool 1a)
  • Program Overview: Describe the CBWM program being analyzed. List involved parties, stakeholders, and their interests in the CBWM program (Tool 1b, 2a).
  • Audience: Identify the report’s target readership.
  • Report Structure: Outline the organization of the report.

4. Project Background and Approach

  • CBWM Background: Contextualize the importance and scope of CBWM efforts (Tool 2a)
  • Methodology Overview: Summarize the approach to SROI analysis, including specific models or frameworks used. You can refer to this guidebook and list out the Steps to Building a Case for Investment, highlighting the specific methodologies and tools you used in your analysis. 
  • Project Scope: Clarify the scope of the SROI analysis (Tool 1a).

5. Understanding the Context, Activities, and Achievements

  • Context: Outline key forces driving the need for the program.
  • CBWM Objectives: Detail the goals of the CBWM program (Tool 2a, 3a).
  • Program Inputs: Describe resources allocated to the program (Tool 2a).
  • Program Activities: Enumerate the actions taken by the program (Tool 2a). 
  • Work Completed: Describe the tasks completed during the reporting period. Highlight obstacles encountered and strategies implemented to overcome them (Tool 2a). 
  • Milestones Reached: Highlight any significant milestones achieved.

6. Identifying, Measuring, and Valuing Benefits

  • Benefits Identification: Identify and categorize the key benefits resulting from the CBWM program, considering both expected and unexpected outcomes. Use feedback, stories, and quantitative measures to frame these outcomes (Tool 3a, 3b).
  • Impact Measurement: Detail how changes or benefits brought about by the program are measured, and the data collected to express these changes. Include relevant performance indicators or metrics (Tool 4a, 4b, 4c).
  • Valuation Methodology: Outline the methods used to assign value to outcomes, whether monetary (using financial proxies) or qualitative (through narrative examples) (Tool 5a, 5b).
  • Assumptions and Considerations: Explain the assumptions and considerations made when valuating and attributing your program’s impact, summarizing insights from observations, experts, and community and stakeholder partners regarding the program’s impact (Tool 4a). 
  • Monetary Equivalent of Benefits: Detail the value in monetary terms of the benefits generated by the project (Tool 6a).

7. Calculating SROI

  • ROI Calculation: Present the formula and calculations used to determine the SROI ratio (Tool 6a, 6b).
  • Analysis Interpretation: Interpret what the SROI ratio means for the CBWM program’s value.

8. Conclusions and Recommendations

  • Key Insights: Summarize the main findings from the SROI analysis.
  • Future Directions: Offer recommendations for program improvement and future research areas.

9. References

  • List all sources cited in the analysis.

10. Appendices

  • A. Stakeholder and Partners Engagement: Document the process of engaging with stakeholders and collecting data (Tool 1b). 
  • B. Data Collection Methods: Describe the methodologies used for data gathering and analysis.
  • C. Detailed Calculations: Provide in-depth calculations and methodological justifications.
  • Other Supporting Documents: Include supplementary materials such as charts, graphs, photos, testimonials, or detailed financial statements.
